I again feel like Unleashed and Gens got this down but moreso Gens because it implements the Boosting skill aspect and makes it to where you kinda have to know what you are doing to do well. How long can you keep it up? When you can keep it up then the game just becomes too easy. The Boost is a system that in of itself is the reward but it's like holding a world record. Going back to Unleashed, the Werehog was in place to increase game length because Boost stages are very easy when you know it inside out but even then they can be pretty easy. I feel like Unleashed and Generations got stage design down perfectly for Modern Sonic with the open ended and linear level design mash-up but then we face another problem: length of the overall game.

  • I think the boost gameplay has done a lot of things right that a new Adventure game could learn from: SEGA has already done many experiments on how to improve on this dilemma of offering exploration, speed and challenge. The problem with that is that this is difficult to combine with open stage layouts and benefits from limited movement options. The main drawing point of the boost formula is its fast pace and reaction based gameplay. I think that there could be a middle ground between adventure and boost gameplay. The Adventure Formula would honestly be really refreshing and they could implement a ton of new things and Classic aesthetics like you mentioned isn't the worst idea but make it like how it was in SA2 where a 3D version of Green Hill Zone was unlockable. I honestly think the Boost formula is great but the 2D sections and level design does drag it down a tad. Modern Sonic never experienced Sonic Mania. Yep, the timelime was split in Generations.
